The Final Frontier

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Well, I’ve been fighting some terrible bug for the last few days (that I caught from my Dear Husband) so I’ve had quite a bit of time to surf the web for wonderfully weird knitting.  This week, Star Trek!  Engage!

Lets start with the Original series, you know you need some Spock ears, I mean, I know I do, it’s only logical

This looks vintage, I love it, I can’t find the pattern to save my life.  If you can find it, pleas comment with a link!!!  Look how fantastic this red shirt crew member looks!  Presumably he wont be around much longer, so say good bye to ensign Ricky before he goes down to the surface with McCoy, Spock and Kirk

This blanket is truly amazing!  If I had the patience to make this, I’m still not sure I’d be able to stay motivated until the end, kudos!

This is a baby romper for only the most awesome of babies, heck, most of them are bald when they show up, you can have your own little Picard!

How about the whole crew from Voyager?  You know you need them!

Next Generation is my fave, quickly followed by Deep Space 9.  Which is your favorite Star Trek Series?

Red Dwarf

Friday, November 21st, 2008

I’ve been reminiscing with some friends about an old sci fi British comedy that I used to watch all the time (when it was actually on public access here) and I thought I should share it with all of you.

Red Dwarf follows a hand full of characters on their trip through space.

Dave Lister is the lay about, slovenly, lovable looser of the crew.

Arnold Rimmer, formally a bossy twit of a crew member, now the ships Hologram.

The Cat, a distant descendant of Lister’s cat that he smuggled on the ship when the journey began, and quite the snappy dresser ;)

The ships computer, Holly (who has been played by a man and a woman in the course of the series) claims to have an IQ of 6,000 (but also claims to have computer senility now, and that has depleted Holly’s inelegance)

Kryten, who joins the crew a few seasons into the show, is an overly polite android.

The basic premise of the show is that Lister, a crew member on the ship Red Dwarf, was placed in Stasis as a punishment right before a radiation leak kills everyone on the ship (except Lister’s pregnant cat which he’s hidden in the cargo bay). Holly keeps Lister in stasis until the radiation levels are no longer lethal. Rimmer, being a colossal prick, quickly takes over the hologram system (which can only house one persons consciousness) to save at least a part of himself. 3 million years go by and Holly wakes Lister up to an empty ship. He eventually runs in to a flamboyantly dressed man, The Cat, who he later realizes is the descendant of his cat, and Rimmer’s hologram. Lister just wants to go home to earth, and they start their journey.

Give this show a shot and I guarantee you’ll be laughing and “smeg” will become part of your every day language

Weird Hats

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

It’s the time of year where you need to bundle up!  And as my mother told me, you loose the most heat from your head, so wear a hat!

This Megaman hat brings back some memories (check out the etsy shop I found this in, there are a ton of oldschool game hats!)

I giggle everytime I look at this hat, priceless!  Chain Comp!

I enjoy this mohawk hat because I’d like a mohawk, but only if I could quickly take it off when I came to work :)

oh, Klein bottle hat, you are a conundrum!

I’d be lying if I told you this Boston Terrier hat didn’t freak me the hell out, gives me the jibblys…

The pink bunny hat in itself isn’t really weird, it’s just my hubby wearing it while eating a carrot that’s strange, it does capture his personality surprisingly well though….

Weird Socks

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

I lack the patience and dedication to knit socks, but appreciate those who can, and as the weather gets colder and I really need to think about keeping my feet warm I find myself amused by many a hilarious sock that I wish I could craft. Alas I will be buying mine from a store and they won’t be nearly as cool :(

Yay skeletons with sombreros! It’s a bit late for Día de los Muertos, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the socks!

Whether you’re a Mac person or just love Breakout, these socks are for you!

Everything has Bluetooth these days! Oh, sorry, I’m talking on my Bluetooth headset, not to you…..

This is where I got my space invaders chart for my bibs!

These socks are hilarious! If you don’t get it, I’m dreadfully sorry, you will just have to trust me that they are funny :)

Weird USB drives part deux!!

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Today we are going to get expensive. Bling it up baby!

Why not encase your data is the finest leather. Ignore the fact that you can’t even encase your feet in it, your data deserves the best!

How about a Walnut or Cherry wood case accented with 24K gold? Why wouldn’t you is really the question.

How about some crystal, a girl can’t have enough glittering crystals can she? How about putting that all around a shiny padlock, I’m serious, it’s a pad lock.

If a bunch of little crystals isn’t your bag, how about one big one, shaped like a heart?

Or why not go for all out jewelry? You even have your choice of silver or gold with this USB necklace.

or how about this 18k 8gb USB drive?  It’s not decadent at all!

Live it up like you’re on top of the Dot Com bubble and the good times will never end!

Weird Charts

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

In case you don’t have the time/ambition to knit something that in itself is weird, maybe you want to make a scarf or a hat with something weird on it. Thank the knitting elder gods for charts!

mmmmmm, brains

Perhaps you need to knit Captain Kirk or Spock into something, it could happen.

Andre the Giant OBEY charts, in case you ran out of spray paint.

Put the guys from MST3K on your hat, imagine what they would say to mock the movie that is your life

Make any image into a chart! Even your own face!

Everyone needs a good skull chart, I mean honestly

And the winners are…

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

The magic Random Number Generator has spoken and the winning commentors are:

#6: Molly S. – One Skein Wonders
#10: Katie B. – Stitch ‘N Bitch Nation
#25: Rayleen – Charmed Knits

Congratulations, ladies!

And now for a fresh giveaway. I made up my mind recently to give up any chances of learning to crochet and to save my hooks for edging my knitwear. I have tried so many times and failed so many times to teach myself how to crochet. I got really close, too, but somehow my brain just doesn’t operate in that mode. That’s why I want to giveaway my other Stitch ‘N Bitch book The Happy Hooker to the first person who can send a message to me on Facebook. (Had to make it a little tricky! But keep in mind that my userpic is the same picture I have on my “About Me” page here on the site…) Send me a message with the subject title “The Happy Hooker” and include your email address.

Go!

Link Updates & the Giveway is Close at Hand!

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

I updated the blogroll section on the website and you may be happy to see a link to your blog. I included more blogs that are updated on a fairly regular basis and (for the most part) have something geeky or crafting-related in them. If you want me to include your blog and you fit the criteria I used above, please email me.

Also, only 2.5 more hours until I pick the book winners. Immediately after that, I’ll have ANOTHER book giveaway to post. It’s craziness, I know. More details to come.

Happy November Book Giveaway!

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

I love giving gifts. I go crazy over birthdays and Christmas. After I learned how to knit, all my friends and family got unique knitted presents at every holiday and I never give up the opportunity to bake something as a thank you or on a birthday.

I’ve been slowly going through my craft room since our move in May and have made a lot of room. I did a huge de-stash awhile ago and now I’m at my library. I know many knitters who are not only yarn addicts, but book addicts as well. Couple that with the fact that I’m a former English major and goodness knows I’ve got plenty to read… and plenty that I never get around to.

That being said, I have three books that I’d like to give away to you fantastic Mario Scarf readers. All you need to do is make a comment on this post by tomorrow night (Monday, November 3) by 9 pm Eastern Time with a list of the books in order of preference. I’ll randomly generate three numbers and try to match the books to the winners’ choices.

The books are:

Stitch ‘N Bitch Nation by Debbie Stoller

One Skein Wonders Edited By Judith Durant

Charmed Knits: Projects for Fans of Harry Potter by Alison Hansel

Start commenting tonight!

PS: If you’re a new commentor, there may be a delay on your comment appearing because I have to approve it, but don’t worry! It’s been received and is in the queue!
